Mission
The
North Carolina Attorneys Institute for Equal Rights advocates for lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in North Carolina through
education, policy reform, and direct legal services, toward the goal of
eliminating legal barriers to full equality.
History
The NC GALA Institute for Equal Rights was founded in 2003 by the
Board of the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Attorneys, as a non-profit
organization to expand the programs and goals of NC GALA beyond the limited
scope of the organization as a professional membership entity. After almost
10 years as a referral source for LGBT-friendly attorneys and a provider of
continuing legal education on topics of LGBT interest, the Board determined
that a more expanded program was needed. In 2003, the NC GALA Institute was
incorporated, and as of January, 2004, the NC GALA Institute is able to
accept donations as a charitable 501(c)(3) organization as designated by the
Internal Revenue Service.
