There have been several cases in North Carolina in which insurance companies canceled health coverage or failed to pay when it was discovered that the client had or might have AIDS. Unfortunately, insurance by its very nature involves lawful discrimination. Insurance law recognizes that different hazards and risks will require different policies and premium rates. An insurer may even refuse to provide insurance when it considers the risk to be great. Thus, insurance rates and the ability to obtain insurance at all may depend on any number of factors which may affect an insurance company's risk. Insurance companies in North Carolina may not discriminate "in any manner" based on sex, and this may provide some protection against gender-based discrimination in issuing policies or setting rates.
A couple may save on auto insurance if both partners own at least one of the vehicles. In that instance, it is possible to take out a family or multiple car policy in which you designate who drives which vehicle. Doing this can save a significant amount of money.
